A reader asked how to know if he means it. His words are the least reliable place to look.
A woman wrote in with a question I get some version of almost every week.
"How do I tell if he's actually serious about me, or just wasting my time until something better comes along?"
It's exactly the right question to ask. And most women try to answer it by listening to what he says, which is the least reliable signal there is.
Words are cheap, and good ones are cheaper
A man who's killing time can still say lovely things. He can call you beautiful, talk about a trip you'll take someday, even say he's never met anyone like you.
None of that costs him anything. Talk is the easiest thing in the world to hand out.
So you stop grading him on his words and start reading the things that actually take effort. Effort is where the truth lives.
Watch consistency, not peaks
A time-waster runs hot and cold. A great week, then three days of fog. Big talk on Saturday, silence by Tuesday.
A serious man is, above all, consistent. He's reachable. He does what he says he'll do, in the small things as much as the big ones.
One grand romantic night tells you almost nothing. Six ordinary days in a row of steady effort tell you everything.
Watch how he handles a small no
Here's a quiet test that reveals a man fast. Put a gentle boundary in his way, keep a plan with a friend, take your time on something he's rushing, and watch what he does.
A serious man respects it. He might be disappointed, but he gives you room, because he actually cares how you feel.
A man who's just passing through sulks, pushes, or goes cold to punish the boundary. How he treats your "no" tells you more than a month of compliments.
Watch whether he plans a future, even a small one
A man who sees you as temporary keeps everything in the present. This weekend, tonight, right now.
A man who's serious starts, on his own, to fold you into what's ahead. Tickets for next month. "You'd love my sister." A standing thing on a Thursday.
You don't have to interrogate him to see it. You just have to stop filling in the future for him and notice whether he reaches for it himself.
So, back to her question
If you're wondering whether he's serious, take your eyes off his words for a week and watch the effort, the consistency, the way he handles a boundary, the way he reaches for the future.
That alone will tell you most of what you need to know, usually long before your heart is in too deep to walk away.
There's also a way to set the tone from the very first dates, so the time-wasters reveal themselves fast and the serious men lean in harder.
There's a way to draw out a man's real intentions early, so a commitment-ready man steps up and a time-waster shows his hand before he can cost you months.
You can't control whether a man is serious. You can absolutely stop guessing, and stop handing your months to a man who was never going to step up.
Read the effort, not the words. It almost never lies.
Talk soon,
Matthew Coast
P.S. Keep this rule close. A man will tell you who he is in how he acts when something is a little inconvenient for him. Believe that over any sweet thing he says. Here's how to spot it early.
